Pawns can definitely move two spaces on the first move in modern games... Not that it even relates to this opening...

From what I have read, this setup was more common before some of the rules of chess had changed. I'm not sure if originally pawns were able to move 2 spaces for an opening move.

NO good at chess (just chase). However, having been married to a chess nut (can I get away w/chestnut?--he was a nut--'specially about chess, I've got to say I'm glad you wrote this for all those people who DO play. My son will enjoy this! Besides, all the stuff I read I don't anything about is what keeps me dreaming at night!

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but the d-Pawn is directly in front of the Queen and would not provide an open path... Queen to a5 does not check the King, also it would take quite a few extra moves...

Do you not move your pawn at D2 to D3, then move your Queen out to 5A..that way you take the blacks pawn and have the King in check. Once they move, you can start ripping away their board.

Thank you! Am just getting back into playing chess after not touching a board for at least 20 years. These moves bring back some memory, but you clearly show how to get started.
